Memorial Day Gratitude
Today familys across America will be enjoying barbeques, swimming pools and all other types of fun activies in and out of the sun. I hope that they pause during thier festivities to remember and thank those that gave of themselves - either in time or the ultimate sacrifice of thier life in order that we may enjoy the flavors of freedom that we taste today.
Coming from a military family myself I hold a special place in my heart for each and every one of our Military Men & Women that serve on and off the front lines of the worlds hot zones and enable me and my loved ones to enjoy the simple freedoms that we all often take for granted.
So today I don't write to you about self help, self developement or public speaking but rather I write to you about gratitude.
If you know a solider - tell him or her a heartfelt thank you for their service to you and your country. If you are a solidier or were a soldier - then this former Airborne 3rd ID Marne Dog extends to you his humble thanks for keeping me and mine safe, and salutes you for what you have done and/or are doing for your country.
If you either do not know or were never a soldier - then the next time you see one on the street, in the airport or where ever - stop, shake their hand and let them know your gratitude for their service to you and yours. For they are the quiet guardians of our shores and our freedoms - without them your world would take on an entirely different face. One with not so pleasant a smile!
For my friends outside the borders of the USA - I know you have your own soldiers protecting your countries interests - I would urge you to take a moment to thank them as well - where or not is it your "Memorial Day."
Thank a Soldier!

Controlling Your Frustration
During the course of the Success Atlas e-zine and just a little so far in this blog - I have shared quite a few personal development tips and techniques on using the good to get better, we’ve stayed up and positive the majority of the time. However, there is a level of reality that has to be dealt with from time to time. One of the realities is that frustration is a daily event for most of us. Still worse it comes in some pretty heavy doses at times. During times of frustration, whether being dealt in heavy or light doses, we need to know how to deal with our frustrations. This is an important skill that is neglected in the curriculum of the schools we all attended (at least the ones I was fortunate enough to attend).
The inability to keep you frustration in check and under control will have a greater negative impact on your productivity and quality of output, than the lack of intelligence, creativity, vision or even energy. In all honesty your unchecked frustration will have a greater impact then all of these qualities combined – that is how important it is. In addition, frustration has a trickle-down or domino effect on those around you. This is an important consideration for those of us who are leaders in our organizations (this includes families). For you see, leaders depend heavily on their staff to help them attain and maintain their success. If as a leader you do not keep your frustration in check, the natural trickle-down effect of your frustration will cause you to let your feelings leak out onto your staff. By doing this your literally contaminating the very team you’re depending on for your success. This brings to mind one word – unwise!

Beliefs: Abandon Or Action
Attitude ranks high on the list of things that drive what action you take or do not take. Your attitude is molded by the things you think about during the majority of your waking hours, as well as your deep seeded beliefs. Your beliefs further influence your thoughts about the world around you. So, your beliefs are one of the roots to your success. Put simply – your thinking and your beliefs will, either fuel fear and cause you to abandon attempts, or fuel confidence moving you to action. Which do you believe will facilitate your desired level success, abandon or action?
Yes, it is true your beliefs have that much power. What you believe about relationships, risk, goal-setting, success and failure will either push you towards your dreams and goals or push them away from you. It has been said that the basic success formula is:

From Know to Now – Believe it to Achieve it!
One of the single most influential factors to your personal and even your professional success is your beliefs about yourself and your abilities. Napoleon Hill said it so well many years before I even knew about this ‘Law of Belief.’ He said “Whatever you can conceive and believe you can achieve.
Your reality today is or has been populated with those things that you believed in the past. Your reality of tomorrow will be further populated with those things that you can conceive and believe today and beyond. We even go so far as to block out information that is contradictory to our beliefs. Successful people consistently believe that they will succeed, period. They do not spend their time considering, entertaining or pondering all the ways they could possibly fail. They focus their beliefs on their success and all they ways in which they can and will attain it.
You will spend the bulk of your time acting in a matter consistent with your internal beliefs. So I would highly recommend fostering a very important belief system which I will call affluence awareness. An affluence awareness is a where you absolutely believe that you are going achieve your personal, professional and financial goals. This affluent belief in yourself will cause you to become more aware of knowledge and opportunities around you that will bring you to your goals far faster than if you missed these important ‘cues.’ This brings out the outwardly subtle but all too important difference between positive knowing and positive thinking. While positive thinking generally is all about wishing or hoping, positive knowing is when you absolutely believe that no matter what, you will be successful.
Another key related to your beliefs is willpower. As many have learned willpower is essential to any success small or large. Willpower is based on confidence, conviction and faith that you can realize your dreams. It is based on your positively knowing that you have to ability to triumph over all obstacles to reach your dreams. Are you seeing the difference in positive knowing over just positive thinking? One way to strengthen your willpower is with persistence. Work on your goals DAILY – no matter how little to something toward your goal each and every day. You can also build your will power through inspiration - read the biographies of other successful people hear how they did it. What things did they do that you can learn from? I personally get these stories on audio so I can otherwise inactive time to get this information. Times like when I am driving or working in the yard, turning this otherwise mentally unproductive time into a time of inspiration and idea generation. The more information you take into your mind consistent with success, the more likely it is that you will develop the willpower to push you through the obstacles and difficulties you will experience.

Overcoming the Plight of Procrastination
Quicker and quicker things are being accomplished in today’s world. Computers, PDAs, cell phones, smart phone, and many more marvels of modern technology have enabled us to accomplish more in less time then we could have imagined a mere 5-10 years ago. With all this ability to get things done at our fingertips, why do so many put off their responsibilities and even their dreams? Why do they put off accomplishing tasks that would launch their careers, their relationship, or their self-esteem to new heights? Why do they continue to endure the pain of wondering “What if?” Let us spend a few minutes answering those questions, as well as sharing some steps, you can take to avoid becoming (or remaining) at the mercy of the plight of procrastination.
Fear tops our list as we try to answer these questions. “The main reason people procrastinate is fear,” says Neil Fiore, Ph.D., and author of The Now Habit. Many procrastinators fear they will not accomplish what they are setting out to do. They fear they do not have the necessary talent or the needed tools to complete the task. They fear they will look foolish or amateurish in the eyes of their peers. Most of them would prefer to be called lazy and be seen as lacking in effort. Rather than make consistent timely attempts, risk faltering in these attempts, and be seen as lacking in ability. For example – we all can name any number of students that would blame the failing of a mid-term on only studying the night prior to the test, rather than admit to themselves that they could have gotten help via a tutor or simply by applying their time to hitting the books more regularly and consistently during the semester.

Mining Your Acres of Diamonds
Some time back I heard a story that I would like to share – the story was about a farmer in Africa who heard many accounts of other farmers making their fortunes by discovering diamond mines. The tales got his heart racing and his mind reeling with the dreams he could fulfill if only he could find a diamond mine. Quickly he sold his farm and off he went to prospect for the riches that so many others had found in the glittering gems. He spent the rest of life wandering the African continent searching, unsuccessfully for those precious stones. Finally, broken down, worn out, and fed up, the farmer threw himself off a cliff into the ocean and drowned

Top 10 Ways to Stay Focused on Your Goals & Objectives
As a speaker in the area of goal setting and achievement I am often asked my opinion on what I believe are the keys to reaching one’s goal and objectives. While the answer to this question alone can take up a half-day seminar, allow me to spend the next few paragraphs covering the top ten.
However, before I get started, please realize the one thing that above all launches you towards your goals faster than all the top ten lists you will ever hear or read is consistency. All of your goals, dreams and aspirations are going to require not only effort but also a sustained effort. The best analogy I can give you is pushing a car. Most of you during the course of your life may have had to push a car that ran out of gas or broke down. You strained your muscles to get that car in motion. The sweat poured from your bow and finally the wheels began to turn. Once the 1200 pound car was in motion, the pushing became a bit easier. All you had to do is continue to put forth a little effort and you’d be at the gas station shortly. (Barring any hills of course). But if you would at any time stop pushing, even for a moment, you would have to put forth EXTRA effort again to get those wheels rolling.
Achieving your goals is much like pushing a car; you cannot work hard for a day or two and then stop. Pick up your goal again later and work for a day or two and then stop again. You need to put for the consistent effort that will get those wheels rolling. Then once you have that 1200-pound monster rolling forward at a good speed all you need to do is keep putting forth a little consistent effort. With this type of consistency you will reach your goals far faster than with the start and stop method so many people practice these days.
Here are ten of the ways you can focus that consistent effort to get even more out of the effort you put forth. I have found these ‘techniques’ very useful and honestly believe that if you put them to work for you that you too will reap their rewards.
1. Write your primary goals down. There is something that happens when you put pen to paper and write out your goals. It seems to activate your mind and your goals become ‘written’ into your sub-conscious, making your more aware of situations, people and events that will bring you to your goals faster.
2. Re-write your top tens goals daily. Each day re-write your top ten goals without looking at your previous lists. This process accomplishes two things.
a. Deeply imbeds your high priority goal into your sub-conscious.
b. Weeds out those goals that are really important TODAY. Those goals that are not truly high on your long-term priority list will not consistently remain in your top ten lists. This will help you focus on what is truly important rather than those whims all fall victim to.

Three Fundamental Tenets for Success
I was on of lucky children that grew up with a father in the military. Serving his country and setting a great example of what a proud man does to insure his family has the necessities of life. As I look back over those years growing up in that military world as well as the time I myself spent in the US Army, I can see a number of similarities between the military and personal or business life. One example would be the person, business or Military Unit that uses superior strategy against their competition (or for) will be the victor. There are three such strategies that I believe are fundamental tenets for ones success whether it be in their personal life, their business life or in their military life.
The first tenet I was to share with you is your goals. Yep, you knew I was going to bring goals into this didn’t you? The military calls it the Principle of the Maneuver. This tenet tells us that we need to be specific and clear about the goal but we need to be flexible about the way reach the goal. Studies indicate that this trait is the single most important trait that you will need to foster and develop for success in out time of rapid change.

Attitude: Here Lies I CANT - Rest In Peace
Attitude has a direct impact on your success, no matter how you define that success. Whether success to you is being a good student, a profit-generating business man/woman or raising a child that is ready for what the world has to offer. Your attitude, positive or negative, will have a direct impact on the quality and quantity of your success.
Your attitude is a primarily driven by the things in your life, past, present and future that you focus upon. If you focus on the successes, both large and small, of your past and your present, then your future will continue to be populated with such successes. If, however, your focus is on that which you did not accomplish, then your future will be clouded with events and tasks that you believe you cannot accomplish.
A small example of such a “can’t focused” attitude comes directly from my own experience. Some would say that I have a gift for drawing. For as long as I can remember I have been able to draw anything that I could see. Birds, tanks, cats, airplanes and even the human body were the topics of many of my drawings in the past. However, I am red/green color-blind. Growing up knowing that I did not see color the same way the rest of the world did – led me to the belief that I could not draw in color, nor paint in color. This self-limiting attitude followed me into my 30s, when I finally decided to bury the believe that I cant do in color what I have been able to so crisply do in pencil for many years. I bought a painting kit and video, watched some public broadcast TV episodes of Bob Ross. With in a week I had painted my first full color lakeside sunset scene complete with wispy clouds and proud tree lines. Now to be honest, it was no Picasso but I felt a pride that one feels when they finally overcome an obstacle that has been in their way for far too long. This was the moment I decided it was time for the death of all my “I Cants.”

One Key to Success is Positive Emotions
Do you want your life to be more positive in every area? Your health, your well being even your feelings of success and happiness? Then one key you need to utilize to unlock this flight to success is your positive emotional energy.
Think about it for a moment, you have had a day when something good happened (getting that job, he or she said yes to going out with you or something else that was important to YOU) and you were happy. Along with that happy, smiling, bright-eyed feeling came some excited energy. On the other side of that same coin is that vacuum of no energy that comes should something unpleasant happen to you.
See the pattern? Your emotions either provide you with energy or suck it right out of you. Positive emotions provide a pool of excited and charged energy while negative emotions pull the plug on that pool and your energy swirls right down the drain. When you emotions are positive you sparkle with energy and enthusiasm, you interactive more with the people around you, they respond more positively to you and you even think more creatively. However, when you are depressed, angry or negative for any reason (valid or not), you feel tired, listless, frustrated and finally burnt out.
